“Camcoated” Exhausts on Le Mans cars

20% of the cars entered in the 2009 Le Mans 24 hour race were fitted with exhausts that had been ceramic coated by Camcoat Performance Coatings in Warrington.

“Camcoating” is the application of three completely different polymer ceramic materials to exhaust manifolds, pipes and repackable silencers. A hard, smooth finish is applied internally to provide the first level of thermal insulation and to speed up the exhaust gas discharge. A base ceramic is then applied externally with either a satin black or Cermakrome™ top coating. Careful preparation of the base metal and individual curing of each thermal barrier coating provide a durable, economic and effective way of significantly reducing the power sapping heat radiated from the exhaust.

The same coating system was applied to all the V12 Superleague Formula cars prior to the start of the racing series last year. With the black finish race and rally teams have found the exhaust cools so much quicker after engine shut down that it is possible to touch the exhaust manifold before the cam cover which can make for quicker and safer repair stops.

Camcoat have been applying these and other motorsport coatings for fifteen years for well respected component manufacturers such as SS Tube Technology, Primary Designs and Alcon Components and for individual teams and competitors in all sectors and levels of motorsport.

If you would like to benefit from this experience please contact Peter Carter on info@camcoat.com or call 44 (0)1925 445003.

New website

Welcome to the new camcoat.com website.

We have tried a new broader approach as we have found that many of the motorsport coatings are of equal interest to customers in other industries. We will therefore include these applications in our news items. However to kick off we are publishing an article in the July issue of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics magazine and a general press release following our continued substantial involvement in the ceramic coating of Le Mans car exhausts.
A postcard version of this release has also been posted to several hundred existing and potential motorsport customers.

We would like this site to be interactive so encourage you to comment on our published features and also to make your own inputs using the blog.

Upcoming Shows

Camcoat are exhibiting at the Mortons Media/Carole Nash International & Mechanics Motorcycle Show at Stafford Showground on October 17/18th. We will have a couple of bikes and samples of all our coatings on view on Stand S8 in the Sandylands Hall. Please come and discuss what our coatings can do for you.
Tony Freeman's Weslake with Black Satin ceramic coated exhaust and brother Gary's immaculate Honda again with Black Satin ceramic coated exhaust will take pride of place. Also on show will be ceramic coated pistons, thermal dispersant coated cylinder heads and barrels and lubricant coated camshafts, valve stems and piston skirts. We are the leaders in ceramic coating motorcycle exhausts for power and good looks.. Extract extra horsepower with our piston coatings.

We are also showing at Race Retro on 12-14th March 2010 at Stoneleigh. We have extended our stand O8 in Hall 2 to 18 sq m to accomodate my Phantom P79 Classic Clubmans race car as well as the Weslake race bike. Samples of the range of exhaust coatings and piston coatings will be on show.

The Carole Nash International & Mechanics Classic Motorcycle Show

The Carole Nash International & Mechanics Classic Motorcycle Show at the Stafford County Showground during 17-18th October was a resounding success. The Camcoat Stand S8 in the Sandylands Hall attracted enormous interest as visitors were able to see and feel the range of ceramic exhaust coatings, the triple piston coating system and the heat reducing thermal dispersant coating TLTD applied to a cylinder block .

The Satin Black exhaust coating on a GSXR1000 header was of most interest as it replicates exactly the original finish on many classic bike exhausts. The polished Cermakrome finish applied to a XT250 exhaust looked the business and also attracted a lot of interest as it can be applied to used exhausts, unlike chrome plating.

The two race bikes, a Seeley Weslake and Honda K4 kindly loaned by Tony & Gary Freeman attracted a lot of attention and numerous photographs. Both these bikes have raced with our “Racespec” internal & external ceramic exhaust coatings for up to five full seasons with no coating damage.

With our ability to ceramic coat exhausts and engine parts, apply lasting factory black finishes to barrels and heads, powder coat frames and other cycle parts and apply the new tinted anti-corrosion coating to chrome plated parts Camcoat are able to offer the classic motorcycle restorer, mechanic or owner a complete one-stop coating service.

We will certainly be there next year but before then see us at the Race Retro Show in March at Stoneleigh.

Camcoat at Race Retro 2010

Following last years success at this show the stand area was increased this year to 18 sq m to give space for a car and two motorcycles. The car was my own Phantom P79 Classic Clubmans in rolling chassis form with clear LTC coating on the chassis to show any cracks in the frame or brazing over time, Brilliance" gold on the suspension and wheels, TLTD on the oil cooler/tank, engine and diff casing plus the Turbo X Blue exhaust.

This attractive combination of working coatings attracted a lot of attention and photographs.

The racing bikes were a Honda K4 250 cc and a Seeley Weslake 850 cc kindly loaned by Gary and Tony Freeman respectively. Both have exhausts coated to "Racespec".

The show was made more enjoyable by our neighbouring stand where "George Formby" astride his film replica motorcycle regaled us with frequent bursts of "TT Races" on his ukelele. This is a class act by Graeme Hardy who is also Stan Laurel in the Laurel & Hardy combination seen at the big meetings such as the Goodwood Festival.

All in all a very successful weekend and a pleasure to meet existing customers and future prospects.

Le Mans 2010

Again Camcoat were well represented at Le Mans with the top petrol car (the ORECA LMP1 in 4th overall position)

the highest finisher of those having our ceramic coatings on their exhaust system. Unfortunately Nigel Mansell in the Ginetta Zytec LMP1 car crashed out on lap 4 with a puncture so we were unable to capitalise on that potential publicity. Several of the LMP1 and LMP2 petrol engined cars had our "Racespec" internal and external ceramic coating with the ORECA car and coated exhaust manifolds pictured here.
