Imagine the stressed life of a racing piston. Rotating at up to 20,000
rpm, combustion temperatures of up to 1500 degrees C on the crown with
the risk of being "pinged" to death by detonation and all the
while it must deliver the power for minutes or hours. Quite a challenge
to survive at the limit yet the application of performance coatings
brings about improvements.
A moly-disulphide
dry-film lubricant coating reduces frictional losses and reduces the
chances of galling and scuffing.
A thermal dispersant coating inside
the piston maximises the amount of heat rejection from the metal.
A thin, highly polished
ceramic coating on the crown insulates the piston. The reflective
surface reduces carbon build-up and increases the rate of combustion.
After application of these
three coatings, engine power increases of 5% are achieved through
more ignition advance, a higher boost level or, on two strokes,
by leaning off the air/fuel ratio.
